Hop on a Direct Flight to Greenland and See the Northern Lights

It's the best alternative to Iceland if you're in it for the stunning views of the natural light display.

Getting to the Arctic and marveling at the northern lights has become easier. Aurora chasers looking for more uncharted territories have had their eyes set on Greenland for quite some time. Yet, getting there without too many layovers proved challenging and was a deterrent for many, but not anymore.

A new international airport is officially opening in Nuuk, Greenland's capital city. The airport will allow larger planes to land, making it easier for foreign travelers to reach the destination of their dreams.

Quite a few East Coast Americans looking to catch a glimpse of the northern lights will have it much easier starting this summer. In June, United Airlines will offer nonstop flights connecting Newark Liberty International Airport and the new Nuuk International Airport. It will be a quick trip, and it will take travelers a little over four hours to get there.

Representatives from Greenland said they expect it to bring more tourism and significantly contribute to the local economy, with an estimated $200,000 of anticipated revenue, CNN reported.

It looks like this is only the beginning for Greenland. In addition to the Nuuk International Airport, the country is set to open two other airports by the end of 2026, one in the North (Ilulissat) and one in the South (Qaqortoq).

If you haven't considered visiting Greenland before, this is your sign. And if the northern lights aren't enough, this is a kind reminder that Greenland is also home to polar bears, orcas, and gorgeous natural ice formations. Check out our Greenland guide to get inspired.
