Welcome to "Radio Headspace" and to Wednesday. Like a lot of parents, I was concerned that having kids would distract me from my dreams. But by making a conscious effort to keep my ambitions alive, I've had some of my most productive years as a parent, and in the process, I've taught my son what it means to be resilient. So, today, let's talk about living with purpose. I'm going to tell you why you don't have to put your ambitions on the back burner and how it shows your kids that anything is possible. (relaxing music) Whoo, having kids changes you quite a bit. All of a sudden, you have these concerns you didn't have before, you have new responsibilities. All of these pressures sometimes make parents wanna just put things aside, or they feel like, well, I've lived and now it's their time to live. No, you still have purpose, you're still here for a reason. And although it's tough to accept and it can be scary when you can think of a million things that you want your kid to have, one of the biggest gifts you can give your child is a whole parent. (gentle music) We often give up our dreams and then take the role of coach. But it's good sometimes when you're on a team and you can be reminded that your coach can still play. (laughs) And so at times when our kids see us reach for our dreams and go after the hard things, they're reminded, "Oh, that's what it looks like to play the game at this level. That's what it looks like to take a loss well." And it's scary, because I think also some of us are scared of our kids being our audience. How do we look our child in the face after going after our dreams and seeing it not happen when we're telling them they can do anything? But you know what, guys? It's not about the end journey all the time. It's about how you get to a place. It's about who you are. (soft music) It doesn't matter if you say, "Oh, you could do anything in the world, you're powerful, you're resilient," if every time they see you face a challenge, you give up and you say, "Oh, no, that is not for me," or, "No, it's not time yet." Well, they're gonna say the same thing. They're gonna be judging themselves the way that you judge yourself because you're teaching them how to judge themselves, you're teaching them how you go after your dreams. And if that's sporadic, they're gonna go after their dreams in a sporadic way as well. (calming music) (water burbling) When it comes to finding your purpose or finding your dream, you know, we all want the formula. And I often ask people this. "If you have six...
